History celebrated in Trek event
TWO of Shire of Mundaring’s first fire fighting vehicles will be on display at Trek the Trail as part of celebrations to mark Wooroloo Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade’s 70th Anniversary.
Some of the brigade’s original equipment will be on display at Trek, including the former army vehicle the brigade used for 32 years.
Other vintage FESA vehicles will also be part of the display and there will be an opportunity for community members to find out about being a volunteer firefighter.
This year’s Trek the Trail will be held on Sunday 18 September, starting at Wooroloo and finishing at Chidlow. Trek is an annual event organised by Shire of Mundaring, in conjunction with the Mundaring Visitor Centre, Mundaring Arts Centre and Mundaring and Hills Historical Society.
The event, held on a different section of the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail each year, is aimed at promoting the area’s beautiful trails, natural environment, arts, tourism and significant history whilst promoting physical and social activity.
A free bus and bicycle service runs throughout the morning. Participants can park in Chidlow and be transported to the start line in Wooroloo, or begin their journey from a special half-way point for those less adventurous or able.
This year’s route includes Wandoo occurrences, historic buildings of the Wooroloo sanatorium and travelling through nature reserves and lush farmland. There will be displays highlighting the historic sites, flora and fauna, interactive artworks and activities displayed along the trail.
The Water Corporation School Trekathon will also be held in conjunction with the Trek event. At least six local schools will take part in Trekathon, a way for students to raise money for their school by seeking sponsorship to take part in the event.
The inaugural Have a go with Bendigo photography competition will also be held this year. Participants are encouraged to take photos along the Trail and send in their favourites following the event.

School fundraiser gets students outdoors
SHIRE of Mundaring is encouraging local students to put on their joggers or dust off their bike in preparation for this year’s Water Corporation School Trekathon. The Trekathon is held in conjunction with Trek the Trail, a free event held on a different section of the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail annually.
This year’s event is on Sunday 18 September, starting at Wooroloo and ending in Chidlow.
Shire President Helen Dullard said the Water Corporation School Trekathon was a great way for local students to explore the local trail, get some exercise and raise money for their school at the same time. “Students ask family and friends to sponsor them to take part in the Trek, for example $1 per km. All monies raised go to the participants’ schools.”
“As well as the funds each student raises for their school, there is a $1000 prize up for grabs for one lucky school.“All participating schools are also offered a day of Waterwise incursions, professional development and afternoon tea for teachers.”
For more information on Trek and Trekathon go to www.trekthetrail.com.au or phone 9290 6645.

2010 Trek attracts record crowd
WARM weather, art and historical displays and the natural beauty of the Hills combined to provide more than 5000 people with an experience to remember on Sunday.
Shire of Mundaring has labelled the 2010 Trek the Trail a huge success, attracting the highest number of participants in the event’s seven years,
Shire President Helen Dullard said it was wonderful to see so many people take part in the event, which was aimed at promoting the Shire’s Railway Reserves Heritage Trail.
Walkers and cyclists of all ages travelled eight kilometres from Parkerville to Swan View.
Cr Dullard said the Shire had received many phone calls and emails congratulating it on a great event.
She said one person labelled the Trek “the best event in Perth open to cyclists and walkers”.
“We know how wonderful our shire is and what it has to offer locals and tourists alike, and it’s events like Trek that help us to showcases these attributes,” Cr Dullard said.
“Hopefully people will now spread the word on what we have to offer, and more people will get out their bikes or joggers and enjoy the Trail more often.
“It’s important to note that a lot of hard work goes into organising such events, so the impressive turnout is testament to the efforts of the Shire and event partners; Mundaring Tourism Association, Mundaring and Hills Historical Society and Mundaring Arts Centre.”
Cr Dullard also recognised the valuable contribution of local community groups who provided support before, during and after the Trek.
